Election officials had counted 60,945 ballots by Tuesday evening in the Anchorage city election, showing locked-in leads for Assembly candidates and school board incumbents in the latest round of preliminary results.
In all districts but Eagle River/Chugiak, Assembly candidates who are more aligned with the current left-of-center majority are winning with decisive margins over their conservative opponents.
In the West Anchorage Assembly race, Anna Brawley is winning with a significant lead over her next closest opponent, Brian Flynn. In South Anchorage, Zac Johnson is holding his lead over his next closest opponent, Rachel Ries. Assembly Vice Chair Christopher Constant is winning his bid for reelection in the North Anchorage race with the most significant lead. Incumbent Midtown member Felix Rivera is also on track for victory. In the two East Anchorage races, George Martinez and Karen Bronga are winning. In Eagle River/Chugiak, a largely conservative district, Scott Myers is winning with a large lead.
Anchorage School Board incumbents Dave Donley and Andy Holleman are beating their challengers with decisive margins.
All but one of the city’s bonds and ballot measures are passing. The exception is Proposition 13, which would have changed how the city holds special elections if an Assembly member or mayor leaves office before their term ends.
Tuesday’s preliminary results showed just under a 26% voter turnout so far, though more ballots are left to count. A total of 66,140 ballots had arrived at the election center by Tuesday, leaving at least about 5,195 more to tally, and more ballots will likely trickle in by mail this week.
Ballots that were mailed on or before election day, April 4, have until the Public Session of Canvass on April 20 to arrive and be counted. Election results will not be final until certification by the Assembly, which is scheduled for April 25.
