A 47-year-old woman accused of hitting a pedestrian with her vehicle early Thursday morning in Anchorage’s Rogers Park neighborhood and leaving the scene has been taken into custody, police said.
Anchorage police responded to a report of a person lying in traffic in the area of Maplewood Street and East Northern Lights Boulevard shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday, police said in an online statement. Officers found a man lying in the street, and he was taken to a hospital with injuries, police said in the statement. The man is expected to survive, they said.
As officers were responding to the scene, Anchorage’s police dispatch got a call from Camelia D. Harrison, who, according to police, “claimed responsibility for hitting the pedestrian.” Police said Harrison then hung up and did not answer when police tried to call back. She later called the police again just after 3 a.m. and gave them her location.
Officers contacted Harrison and performed field sobriety tests, police said, and an officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit conducted additional tests.
“Afterwards the decision was made to charge Harrison with driving under the influence,” police said in their statement.
Harrison was taken to the Anchorage Correctional Complex, where she provided a sample that showed her breath alcohol content was zero, police said. They said Harrison’s blood was drawn after a search warrant was obtained.
She was remanded to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center on the DUI charge, as well as charges including third-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to render aid, police said. Harrison was also cited for driving on a suspended license and without proof of insurance, they said.
The charges brought against Harrison weren’t immediately available in online court records as of Thursday afternoon.
