Three members of an Alaska State Troopers SWAT team fired their weapons during a standoff on the Kenai Peninsula last week, the agency said Monday.
Mason Toloff, a 32-year-old Kasilof resident, was shot and killed during the incident that began last Thursday night and resulted in a trooper also being shot and injured, troopers said.
Troopers received a 911 call about a man “yelling and discharging a firearm” in the area of Crooked Creek Road in Kasilof, the agency said in an online statement. Troopers said Toloff fired a shotgun at a drone used in their response, and then also shot a trooper in the leg. The trooper’s injuries were described as not life-threatening.
Troopers said Toloff was shot after he pointed the shotgun at at law enforcement officers early Friday morning.
Three law enforcement officers assigned to the troopers’ Soldotna-based SWAT team fired their weapons, troopers said in an update Monday. They identified the three as troopers Sgt. Ethan Norwood, a 12-year veteran; Trooper Jonathan Lindblom, a 2-year veteran; and Officer Charles Lee, a 4-year veteran of the Homer Police Department.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the incident, troopers said. The state Office of Special Prosecutions will conduct a review once that investigation is complete, they said.
