Another foot of snow forecast along portions of the Seward Highway

Road conditions remained poor on Tuesday afternoon following a forecast for another foot of snowfall on the Seward Highway near Turnagain Pass and Portage, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow began falling on the area late Monday, meteorologist Michael Kutz said. Up to 20 inches of snow was reported to have fallen by Tuesday morning near Girdwood and Portage, he said.

Heavy snow was expected to create whiteout conditions throughout the day and make driving dangerous, the weather service said in a winter weather advisory. The Department of Transportation described conditions on the highway from South Anchorage to Summit Lake as difficult on Tuesday afternoon, with heavy snow and icy patches on the road, the department said.

Kutz said Tuesday morning that snow was also expected to fall on most of the Kenai Peninsula through the day, with up to 8 additional inches expected near Homer.

Anchorage did not see any snow accumulation on Tuesday.

The snow ended early Tuesday afternoon in the northern Kenai Peninsula and began to slow later in the afternoon near Girdwood and Portage, meteorologist Christian Landry said.
