High winds expected in Anchorage starting Saturday night; heavy rain also possible

High winds were forecast across the Anchorage area starting Saturday night, with gusts up to 80 mph possible on the Hillside and along Turnagain Arm, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, another round of moderate to heavy rain was forecast for the city starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday, with minor flooding possible, the weather service said.

A high wind warning was in place for the city from 8 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

Southeast winds of 35-45 mph were expected across most of the city, including lower elevations, the weather servce said. Those conditions were also forecast for higher elevations of Eagle River.

On the Hillside and Turnagain Arm, southeast winds of 40-50 mph with gusts of 65-80 mph were expected, the weather service said.

Meanwhile, a flood advisory was in effect for the city through Sunday evening, with heavy rainfall possible.

“Expect flooding on low lying areas, and along trails and other low areas across Anchorage,” the weather service said. “Storm drains may become overwhelmed causing street flooding hazards.”

Flood watches were also issued for much of the Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound and the Susitna Valley.
