The district has removed books that were “clearly inappropriate” from school library shelves, a spokesperson said. Officials have refused to identify which books or how many.
Sami Graham, who was rejected by the city’s Assembly to run the library, formally requested that the library reconsider who is allowed to access the book “Let’s Talk About It,” by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan.
District officials say at least five of 10 recent medical incidents involving students with overdose symptoms were linked to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that’s the subject of state warnings this month.
The Anchorage School Board on Tuesday approved the charter school’s move into the building to be vacated when the elementary closes. The charter school is currently confined to a high school wing.
Under new protocols, parents can withdraw students from a book fair and must get a book list two weeks ahead of time. School officials are also reviewing library policies.
The school board still needs to approve any changes under the proposal, which would have elementary schools start earlier while middle and high school would start later.
