The Rewind: South flag football shuts out West again, UAA and UAF volleyball streaks snapped

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football saw some dominant performances and exciting finishes. Meanwhile, several other fall sports had major meets and big matchups take place in town. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks volleyball teams tasted defeat for the first time in conference play. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas.

Headlines and highlights

In consecutive weekends, the best flag football matchup of the week was tabbed to be between South and West Anchorage and for the second week in a row, it was anything but as the Wolverines dominated yet again on their way to a second straight shutout of the Eagles.

“It feels great,” junior quarterback Jillian Preston said. “The team came through, stayed strong even through all the (penalty) flags and that’s all we needed to win.”

After blanking West 19-0 using a furious scoring flurry just before halftime to secure victory on homecoming the previous weekend, South took full advantage of its foes not having their starting quarterback by beating the Eagles 31-0 on their homecoming weekend.

“It felt good on ours but it felt real good to beat them on theirs,” senior Nivvah Heartwell said.

The back-to-back triumphs were especially meaningful for the Wolverines, who feel like they were “definitely getting slept on before the season started” and now feel like they have proven without a doubt that they’re the team to beat in the state moving forward.

South’s defense feasted on West’s backup passers, intercepting all three of them, including a pick-six by sophomore Darby D’Amico, who also scored on offense.

“That pick-six was something else,” Preston said. “I wasn’t expecting it, but I’ll take it. If we can get pick-sixes any day I’ll take them all day.”

On the season, the Wolverines have allowed 18 points and produced a staggering eight shutouts.

“I credit our defense for all the games,” said Heartwell, who nearly had a pick-six of her own and scored twice on offense. “That’s how we get our shutouts. Defense wins games.”

In what will likely go down as the game of the year in Alaska high school tackle football, the Bettye Davis East Anchorage Thunderbirds outlasted the Bartlett Golden Bears in the annual Boot game between the two Eastside rivals on Saturday evening. Despite both teams missing key pieces, including both starting quarterbacks, they battled through 48 minutes of regulation and six overtime sessions and combined for 98 points on 14 touchdowns in a 50-48 instant classic Cook Inlet Conference clash.

“Honestly, either team could’ve won that game,” East coach Jeff Trotter said. “Both teams played with incredible heart and effort. As a fan, it’s a fun game to watch, but as a coach, my blood pressure almost killed me out there.”

On Friday night across town in a rematch of last year’s Division I state title game, West Anchorage was powered to a hard-fought victory over South Anchorage by the Herculean effort of junior running back Zephaniah Sailele, who carried the ball 50 times for over 260 yards and scored a trio of touchdowns. Despite his incredible success on the ground, he gave all the credit to a higher power and his offensive line, which goes by the nickname “The Kings” and paved the way for him to steamroll the Wolverines second and third level defenders.

“I love my Kings,” he said. “We had to adjust a lot though because their defense was pretty hard to run against, but I feel like it was a good win overall. ... I give all my glory to the man above.”

The final major regular-season meet of the 2024 high school cross-country season took place on the trails around Chugiak High on Saturday with the annual Smokin’ Stampede. While there were no surprises when it came to who won the boys race as reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Robbie Annett of Grace Christian came in first place by nearly half a minute with a mark of 15:46, the girls race was a different story. In a surprising turn of events, Wasilla sophomore Hailee Giacobbe’s mark of 18:58 edged out Ella Hopkins of Colony (19:07), Rosie Conway of East (19:13) and girls state champion Hannah Shaha of Chugiak (19:14).

The UAA volleyball team embarked on the conference play portion of its schedule and after getting swept in straight sets by Simon Fraser University on Thursday, the Seawolves went the distance with Western Washington on Saturday night before coming up short in the five-set match. Upperclassmen outside hitters Tia Allen and Katie Birtcil-Tipton tied for the team lead in kills in both matches.

The UAF volleyball team had its program-record nine-game win streak halted by Simon Fraser as well but before that, the Nanooks notched their first win over the Western Washington Vikings in the last 15 seasons Thursday in their GNAC opener on the road in a five-set thriller. They had a trio of players reach double figures in kills with senior outside hitter Rachel Pierce leading the way with 18, senior Karli Nielson led the team with 20 digs and junior setter Ainsley Smith recorded a whopping 56 assists.

“A great win for the program, and it took lots of great effort by everyone on the court,” UAF head coach Brian Scott said in a statement. “This is a hard place to play and an even harder place to get a win. Super proud of how we responded in pressure moments and made the ‘must-have’ points.”

The Anchorage Wolverines got their season officially underway last week out of state with back-to-back losses to the Springfield Jr. Blues and Janesville Jets on consecutive nights. They dropped their season-opener to Springfield by a single point in overtime and fell to the Jets after getting outscored in all but one period. Anchorage had four players record a goal over the weekend, including local product Toby Carlson.

Alaska stars shining Outside

Anchorage’s Alissa Pili saw a career-high 22 minutes of playing time for the Minnesota Lynx on the eve of the WNBA playoffs Thursday in a 68-51 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. The former Dimond High multisport star finished with her second-highest point total of the season with eight after going 3-of-7 from the field, including knocking down a 3-pointer. Pili also recorded a pair of rebounds and steals and went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Anchorage’s Brooke Dexter helped lead the Simon Fraser University women’s volleyball team to victories over both University of Alaska squads. Against the Seawolves on Thursday, the former West standout led the Red Leafs to a straight-set sweep with a match-high 17 kills and finished second on the team in blocks with a pair. Two days later on Saturday, her team swept the Nanooks in straight sets as well, and she finished second on the team in kills with 11 and led the way in aces with a trio.

Anchorage’s Tatum Porter scored her second goal of the season for the University of Hawai’i-Manoa women’s soccer team in the Rainbow Warriors’ 4-1 win over Hawaii Pacific on Sunday. It marked the first score in more than a month for the former Dimond high star and 2023 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year, who recorded her first in the team’s season-opening win over Georgia Southern.

Anchorage sisters Frida and Marisol Vargas helped lead their respective college women’s soccer teams to victory over the weekend. On Saturday, Marisol recorded her second straight win and shutout as the goalkeeper for the University of St. Mary (Kansas) in the Spires’ 2-0 victory over Sterling. The next day, Frida scored her second goal of the season in the South Oregon University Raiders’ 5-0 win over Warner Pacific.
